Hey friend! Thanks for stopping here. If we haven’t met in person, I want to introduce myself so you feel like you know me better.
My name is Emnet. It means faith in my native language Amharic. I have been married to my handsome and incredible husband Thomas for 5 years and we’ve been together for 8 years. He’s the love of my life and I’m incredibly thankful that God brought him into my life just the right time. We have a long story on how we met and dated. (We think it’s pretty romantic that could turn into a movie. Haha. I will write about it sometime). We have a daughter, Addis who is the love and light of our life. We also have a 4 year old German shepherd part Siberian husky, Jackie who’s both sweet and annoying. They’re a joy.
My background is Africa, specifically Ethiopia. I was born and raised in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. I lived with my family until I was 26 which was when I got married. My husband Thomas is a born and raised Hoosier, American from a big family. He works for an information security firm here in Indianapolis. I moved to the United States on the coldest day of December in 2013 as we decided our life be based here in the United States for a better career opportunity but our hearts are forever tied to Ethiopia where most of our close families and friends live. We make efforts to visit and spend time there as much as we can.
Sometimes, It’s not easy living in two worlds. It’s easy to miss the familiar and what feels like normal but another way to look at it is that I’ve been given an incredible opportunity to live my life in the best of these two worlds. I can see both cultures coming together in my home and create something unique. I get to indulge in the newness of my American life which provides me with a learning curve and my rich cultural heritage up my sleeve. I learn new things everyday. Usually what I lack in one culture, I find in the other. It’s truly a blessing.
I’m not a culture critic. I write about my life experiences and what I get to observe in my day to day life living in a new country, my encounters with different people, my interracial marriage, my challenges as an immigrant and assimilating to a new culture, my pursuit of ministry, growing in my faith and my newest, best, beautiful but messy, hard life that is motherhood.
In my writings, I invite you into my life and into my ever changing/ evolving worldview. I don’t always get it right but I learn from my writing and want to keep growing. I write not only because it’s an outlet for me but also because I believe I have a story to tell. I sure hope my life’s journey from my humble beginning in Ethiopia to where God is taking me would inspire you, encourage you in your own walks of life and most importantly draw you closer to God! If I’ve done that even by a little nudge or just make you think about what’s important in life somehow, I’ll call that my best accomplishment in sharing my story.
So friend, Thanks for stopping by here! If you want to chat or ask me a question about my life or anything else, leave me a comment or your email and I know I don’t know it all but I’ll be happy to get back to you. If you’re in town, I love coffee chats so I would love to hear from you. Thanks for allowing me to speak to you by giving me your time.
God Bless!
Emnet Gilbert
